Guinevere

Queen Guinevere with royal grace
Stepped silently among the leaves
She paused to listen to a sound
The sharp “crack” echoed through the trees

“Sir Lancelot” she whispered low
“Pray show yourself for Heavens sake
Lest I return to Arthurs side
And to the love that I forsake”

For like her true love Lancelot
From royal feast she stole away
Should Arthur note their treachery
‘Twould be a dark and brutal day

Her love for Arthur did grow cold
And made a sorrow in her heart
She longed to be with Lancelot
They could not bear to be apart

The woods were silent once again
And still no sign of Lancelot
Though Agravain and Mordred thus
Knew Guineveres most sordid plot

Like swallows to their castle keep
They made their way to Arthurs court
And service to their uncle done
Sat by his side to so report

Poor Arthur with a face of stone
Held steadfast though his heart did break
He knew the fate of Guinevere
Would be to burn upon the stake

Artist's Description

Inspired by the excellent work of Sarah Moore and her image Guinevere

I often write in an archaic voice as I enjoy the flow of the words. On being amazed by the Mists of Avalon series of images, I decided to write this piece.
