Soldier by Mark Smith

Originally produced as a CD cover, commission for a small record company. CD info here
acrylic ink.

I was trying to get across (as much as possible for someone like me who has never had to deal with war) the emotional atmosphere of being a soldier during WW2, the idea fit with the title of the album; which was the only guideline I was given for the Brief other than the size requirements and leaving space for text.

Born in Oxford UK and now living in a small town in Cornwall (UK). A major source of inspiration in my work is Landscape and natural objects; and I was heavily influenced by the work of Kurt Jackson during my years at art college. In general my painting is about creating atmosphere; I also have an interest in photography on an amateur basis.

I really love this illustration! what is the size of the original?

  • Thank you. The original is approx 840mm (33in) x 297mm (11.7in); so about 2 A3 sheets side by side.

Great portrait showing their aloneness when they are deployed and away from those
they love. (That’s my take on it.)

  • thanks Marriet; yes it was meant to convey all the various feelings of sadness and loneliness that a person must feel at times when in that position, i’m glad it worked!
