An eerie haze over the city of Melbourne from low cloud cover reflecting the spill of the city lights. A Ferris Wheel spins only occasionally entertaining a few tourists out on this cold night. Melbourne has a strong Art Culture, this sculpture of bells being one example. Art takes on many forms and, on this night, could have been a scene from a George Lucas space movie.

My interest in photography began back in high-school when I used my mother’s Olympus OM-1 to shoot sports events. I learnt to understand film, light meters and other technical issues. I bought my first SLR, a Nikon F70, when I finished uni and became more focussed on shooting portraiture, landscape and photojournalism. Since then I have not looked back opening my own business in 2009 specialising in portrait photography.

    Very nice capture!

  • thanks Jimbo. It is a lovely part of Melbourne at night. I took many many shots and only got one where the ferris wheel was orange. So it is a little lucky too!

Great image! Love the perspective and night lights.

  • Thanks, if you know this sculpture, there is a block of buildings, including the Eureka tower, perched just behind it and it kind of wrecks the effect of the sculpture itself so I basically lay on the ground to ensure that the buildings did not distract from the rest of the image.

Oh my god Mark, I absolutely love this version!!! you have done an amazing job composing this shot!

  • Thanks Nicolette. I wouldn’t say it is better or worse. Just different. I tried to cut the buildings out but it works either way. I got a bit lucky with the Ferris wheel coming out Orange. It just tied my colours together well. I have other shots where it came out in different colours and they were not as eye catching for this POV.

Hard to beleive this is a photograph. Amazing composition, lighting and… everything!

  • Thanks Bruce. No one has looked at this shot for ages so I am glad it caught your attention. It is one of my favourites and I got seriously lucky with the colour of the Ferris Wheel.
