Fear

Fear

This photo has provoked some discussion as to whether the image is more powerful with or without the lips. It is an interesting discussion and I think I have concluded that by narrowing down the distractions from other features of the face, you draw more attention to the eyes. That is just my opinion and I would love to hear further feedback.

Nice one! If you allow me, it would be equally interesting without the sweater covering her lips, it would be even more direct.

  • Mark Elshout replied

Thanks for the suggestion. This concept was influenced by a shot of a middle-eastern girl who’s eyes created a bundle of attention since most of her face was covered. I think the aim to gather attention into her eyes was achieved but the fabric texture is possibly a little distracting and if I was to aim to photograph this style of shot in the future, I would certainly source less distracting fabric. There are a stack of shots of this model throughout my portfolio and this is the only one where I got rid of her lips! Thanks for your feedback. I do appreciate it.

Not to get into the middle of all of this but I like the sweater how it is placed. All attention is then focussed on those stunning eyes this way. I have a similar shot but using a scarf with just the eyes showing with the same picture you mention in mind. You have presented this very nicely and the lighting and clarity are bang on. A very wonderful image :)

  • Mark Elshout replied

Thanks Cody. It has been a bit of a discussion point of late. The great debate about hiding the lips or exposing them. A great discussion in light of educating oneself. Glad you liked it!

This is so stunning! I agree wholeheartedly! It would not have the same impact without the fabric. Beautiful shot!

I think eyes are very appealing, it’s why women with head scarfs hold that allure.
    This definately works well.

  • Mark Elshout replied

Thanks for your input Mary and I can’t agree more. I am always drawn to the eyes.
