Although ‘1897’ is emblazoned above the portals, as a record of major enhancements made, the Holte Hotel was in existence in the 1870’s and probably goes back even further.

It was once a focal point for people who came to the former Aston Lower Grounds, with views the menagerie, the gardens, the duck pond and many other entertainment features – and once hosted the visit of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Circus.

As part of the assets of Aston Villa F.C. it was a popular pre & post match ‘boozer’ for Villa fans before it was closed and fell into disrepair.

When American billionaire Randy Lerner bought Villa in September 2006 he immediately set about renovating the historic pub which is now once again quenching the thirsts of the Villa faithful.

Ohhhhhhhhh………I think I’d love to enjoy a pint in that Pub!! What a beautiful place…………..

  • Thanks Ruth.

It’s even more beautiful inside. Not the spit ‘n’ sawdust place it used to be in the ’70’s & ‘80s but renovated back to it’s glory days in Victorian times.

If you ever come over here Ruth I’d be delighted to buy you a pint in there :O)

“A Pint” shoot a few… and a wonderful…. relaxing night of____________ …. LOL! Very nice Mark… the light blue they spread around really sets this shot.. Love the old feeling in this…why do i feel like someone is watching from the window above the wording The Holte….. and when i look again… it looks as though someone has pulled the curtain back to see in the window below as well……….. ummmm ok loving this very scary shot. LOL

  • Thanks Stephine.

The railings are claret and blue, which are the colours of Aston Villa Football Club, although obviously the claret is less noticable in this shot. There’s actually a gate from the beer garden at the back of the pub to the Holte End car park. Thats the Villas main end where the majority of the singing comes from, and where I’m very pleased to have a season ticket.

I can’t see it as scary lol. Any ghosts of the past in here would be very happy to see it being used again and seeing Villa going from strength to strength.

Very beautiful image! (Thanks for your comment :)

  • Thanks Ellen.

It is beautiful now but less than two years ago it was derelict. The surveyors who went in when Randy Lerner bought Aston Villa said that another six months and it would have had to have been demolished.

It was a great thing he did giving this building it’s dignity back.

Really nice angle and shot. It was a great thing Randy Lerner did to restore the Holte Hotel. It fits in very well with the mosiac too, classic Villa with an eye to detail we were so well known and respected for.
