‘Roy from Oklahoma? You are the last caller on Radio TRT Late Night Phone In. Do you have a question?’. The host leant back in his chair and nodded at Nick.
‘Yeah. Nick.. I been listening to your motivational crap for the past ten minutes. Sounds to me you got it made. Easy for you to talk about hope, and how all of us should persevere but it seems to me like bull shit… I got a wife and three kids. I ain’t got me no job for two years now. Tell me Nick. Do you work?’
‘Yes I do. I do a lot of public speaking around the world, and I..’
‘See. That’s my point. I bet you’ve been to flashy places too huh?’
‘I’ve been to every continent, pretty much. Africa was my favourite becau..’
‘That sucks. You tell me, and everyone else out there that if we fail at something we should try again. And again. You make me sick. See, I’m so busy trying to make ends meet I don’t have time to play with my kids or do sports. Do you have time for kids and sport?
‘Err. I don’t have any children, but I do play golf. I go swimming…’
‘You got a nerve. Coming on this radio show telling all us folks not to give up. Sounds to me like you got everything. You ain’t got no idea how real people live. Real difficulties. Real pain. Your life is easy. You are just a fraud. Man – I’m finished with you. ‘
And with that the caller hung up.
Silence pervaded the air waves as the radio producer sat speechless for six seconds before he fumbled and cut to a song.
‘Hey Nick..’ The pain was written across his face, ‘I’m really sorry about him.’
‘Don’t worry! It’s been fun. We must do this again!’ Nick replied with a genuine smile. With that he rolled off the desk, falling clumsily into his wheelchair. Having no limbs did not make this easy. A minute of wriggling later and he motorised out of the studio.
