After The Harvest
Taken on the hills above my house, Duffield, Derbyshire. It was moving towards sunset so long shadows and warmer hues. I’ve cropped the sky to obey the rule of thirds – interested to know what you think. Would a polarising filter have made a difference? Plus I should have gone for f/11 maybe?
Nikon D80, ISO400, 1/125, f/8 18-70mm Nikon lens, tripod, ND grad filter on the sky.

This looks great…I think if it were mine, I would try to brighten the golden field…just my thinking
Mark Bateman replied
Thanks Crystal. I could and may try that!

I’m waiting. Love the new hat by the way..

This is a great shot Mark and you’ve done very well with the crop… you’ve been taking notes on the rule of thirds I see – working very well in both horizontal and vertical elements.
Its a great Autumnal shot and yes I would be interested to see the effects of a polariser.. perhaps some richer colours. Will look forward to seeing any results.
Mark Bateman replied
Thanks Paul – I appreciate the feedback.

I think that perhaps a polarising filter would work – it seems to make the colours “pop” a little more and you can adjust it to see the difference before you take the photo…I have a UV filter on my lens permanently (to filter out bright sunlight and to stop my lenses getting scratched) and then I can just put the polarising filter on it. As for the F-stop? I have no flippin’ idea…like I said, I shoot loads and fiddle and shoot and then just pick the one I like the best. I really need to get down to studying photography….
Mark Bateman replied
lol. I can’t wait for my polarising filter to turn up. I agree with everyone that the hay could/should look richer. I could adjust – but right now I can’t be bothered!

I think that a polariser would have deepened the blue in the sky a bit for you Mark (it’s what I use all the time and my poppy shots show a result of it better than anything else)
I do like the light here and the foreground is huge and draws your eye through the harvested crops nicely
Mark Bateman replied
Thanks. And I think everyone is agreed. And I can’t wait for my polariser to drop through the post!

Great Capture :))

Thanks Rosina!!

Great work mark! Me myself, well i think a polariser would of worked for you. But in saying that this photograph is just brilliant with the natural look.
Mark Bateman replied
Thanks very much meerimages – very kind of you to drop by and comment. It’s interesting different people’s take.

Awesome
- I like the muted colors and can feel the depth -almost as if I am walking uphill in a very peaceful setting!!Mark Bateman replied
Many thanks Polly – very kind of you to comment.

Nice story shot. Good division by thirds in this composition. The horizon vanishes and the rows also lead the eye to a vanishing point. How often can you do that? Actually, you’ve done that at least a couple times. All of your photography is good!
Mark Bateman replied
Thanks very much Robert for the very welcome detailed feedback. !!
