A statuette depicting a traditional belief that St. Anne taught her daughter, the Virgin Mary, to read sacred scripture.

Rabbis of the time differed as to whether it was seemly for girls to learn more than the alphabet. Their letters, however, were an appropriate study, since girls would someday be mothers who would have to teach their sons the alphabet to prepare them for the study of holy writ.

It is good to think that the mother and grandmother of the Lord enjoyed a rich intellectual life that prepared them to raise the Holy Child.
