In my kindergarten days I was introduced to the school gymnasium. It was so huge, and we had to walk along the edge by the tiled wall so our hard shoes would not mar the shine on the polished floor.
Yesterday I went back and took some pictures. The tile is still on the walls, and the floor is still shiny as a new coin, but the building is now city offices, and the gym is under the care of the park district. Most astonishing, it is tiny, just big enough for a basketball court with about three feet (1m) of “out of bounds” all around, and three rows of child-sized benches along one side.
