Part of the Beijing 2006 – The hutong series; see my same-named journal post for a bit of background.

See the location on a satellite map (Google’s street map doesn’t register with the satellite view!)

Four young boys taking advantage of a pedicab parked along Tiĕshù xié jiē (Tieshu diagonal road or Tieshu byway), using it as a nice secluded place to play a game of cards. The little boy on the left has just discovered me, the one on the right wonders what he’s looking at… the other two are still concentrating on their cards, heads down.

When I took it, I thought I’d missed the shot, and I only had one chance: I’d wanted to catch them unawares. Only much later did I realize that the small boy looking at me, mouth open, and the larger boy looking at him, was actually far better than what I’d had in mind. By now, this image has gained five features (see below) – that should teach me!

It seems children everywhere love to play in these covered pedicabs or rickshaws; probably because they provide a nice enclosed space at their scale rather than the much larger rooms of the grown-up world – and of course they can easily hide in one. Compare the little girl I caught playing in Pondicherry (India) a few years later.

Mooi opgemerkt Marjolein. Wat een privilege voor deze mannetjes☺
    Groetjes, Annie.

  • Ja, die mannekes zaten daar ook of het ding van hun was! Alsof ze elke dag na schooltijd daar een potje kaarten (zoals de oude mannen het op de hoek van de straat doen…)

Dankje voor je leuke commentaar Annie!

The look of the pedicab reminds me of one of those Amish carts. I love the look in the eyes of the little guy who has seen you.

  • Thank you Ethna (for the favorite, too)! I have no idea what those Amish carts might look like, I’ve only ever seen photographs, but never like this. I remember being disappointed when I took the shot: I had hoped to catch the unawares… and didn’t have a good look at the shot for a long time – only to realize that this is far better than what I had in mind, with the interaction between the boys, and with me. :)

    pure Joy!

  • …and I thought I’d missed the shot because the little boy noticed me! Just goes to show you should never throw away a shot – you may learn only later what it actually is you shot! I’m learning to be more open to surprises. Thanks!

  • Thank you so much, leapdaybridge, for this feature! The fourth, in fact, for what I originally thought was a missed shot – that should teach me, LOL!
