A bit of rural China right in the middle of the city – where else but in a hutong? In some of the hutong there are small garden plots hidden away, and there are street markets where produce is being sold, some of it no doubt originating from those garden plots. Though there is a rather large rural area around the city, that is as much as an hour away by car from here – much too far, I think, for a horse and cart to make a daily round trip.
I shot this in the hutong (Lazhu Hutong) just around the corner from my hotel. I walked there most mornings, to pick up some steamed buns for my breakfast, and then continue to the nearest subway station. The owner (who I think sold straight from his cart to the many local restaurants in this area) was having a tea with his friends at the little shop in the background.
