Rain is rare in Khiva.
But it rained that day, a sudden downpour from a sky that had been slowly darkening while I made my round around the ancient city walls. While I sought protection under the awning of a little shop, this woman walked out of a house and stood there in the rain. A moment later she walked off, having spotted the car that was waiting to pick her up.
It was a nice illustration how in Uzbekistan umbrellas serve as protection from the both the sun and the rain (though mostly the first!).
