Rain is rare in Khiva.

But it rained that day, a sudden downpour from a sky that had been slowly darkening while I made my round around the ancient city walls. While I sought protection under the awning of a little shop, this woman walked out of a house and stood there in the rain. A moment later she walked off, having spotted the car that was waiting to pick her up.

It was a nice illustration how in Uzbekistan umbrellas serve as protection from the both the sun and the rain (though mostly the first!).

Nice shot … wall, umbrella and high heels

  • A quite fashionable Uzbek lady – I thought she was probably a business woman. It was as if she was posing for me for a minute, but she was totally unaware of me. Thank you Bruce! :)

Love the solitary figure with that fabulous umbrella set against this historic wall.

  • Thank you for your nice comment, Wendi! I had to react pretty quickly here, as she only stood there for a moment – I still remember that ‘oof! just in time’ feeling. :)

Great capture Marjolein, the “model” made the photo.

  • I agree about the ‘model’ – who was totally unaware of me; she suddenly appered and stood there for only a moment, then she was off. Sheer luck. :) Thank you Eddie!
