Part of two of my permanent themes: Look down!, and Covered (see below).

Another May, another hiking day: finally we had perfect hiking weather not causing us to stay in the city – instead, we went for a hike around an island in the Alkmaarder Meer to the South of Alkmaar. The island has one small village, De Woude, while most of the interior is a nature reservation; pedestrians (only) can walk all around though, on or along the dike. The island is reachable only by a small ferry.

The ferry (1)

This must be the shortest ferry trip I’ve ever made – you can almost hop on at one end and hop off again at the other! On the way back I got another (short) chance to take some photos of the ferry. I loved the anti-slip texture of the heavy metal plating of the deck and the trap doors set in it. Through heavy use, most of the two layers of paint has worn off, and there’s hardly any rust to be seen. This trap door hinge has been worn to a sheen.

The more I see this, especially as a thumbnail, the more it looks like a comma to me…

Covered is about the covers that give (or deny) access to the world below our pavings, especially in our cities, and how they are placed in, or clash with, the pavement. At the very least these covers prevent us from tripping or falling into holes.

The whole series is great, I really like this one, great contrast and detail.

  • Thank you Kim (for the fave, too!

I think this one is becoming my favorite of this series. I might have taken more but I had to hurry just to get these shots! Once it starts moving, it’s practically arrived. :-D But I’m happy with what I got.

The tones and texture are fabulous. Great framing of this hinge. Well done.

  • Thank you very much, Jodie! I was (re)discovering my love for ‘heavy metal’ here. Of course in this shot the sunshine helped a great deal to bring out the shine (and the curious absense of rust). :)

    Yeah I like it!.
I agree with you, that’s the best of the serie.

  • Thank you very much, piref!

While on the ferry there was no time to ponder what I liked best I just concentrated on getting it framed and shot. Only now, with a bit of distance, am I beginning to realize which ones I like best. :)
