Actually, this was Plan B, but Plan A was closed… I’d been to the Sunday market near Ashgabat twice already, so I wanted to do something different, there’s plenty to see in Turkmenistan’s capital. So, I walked to the Botanical garden which turned out to be a lush, green oasis in a bustling city on the edge of the desert…

At every crossing of major paths there was a waterlily pond, much to the delight of the (scarce) visitors. This is my best shot of the pink things the little frog clearly was avoiding.

    Beautiful detail and color !

  • Thank you, Kim.
The flowers were showy, and unavoidable as they were practically the only non-green color in this oasis-in-the-desert botanical garden, so I admit I took a few shots. But for the first time I really looked at the leaves of the waterlilies and was far more impressed with those. ;)

    Stunning Marjolein !

  • Thank you Berns, thanks for the fave too! Glad you like it!

One thing missing in these photographs is the cacaphony of bird song and scents all through this half-neglected botanical garden – an oasis in the city!

Beautiful water lily, great colors in this!

  • Thank you, vigor! I did pick this one for the colors, with the deep red in the center.

The flowers here varied from very pale pink to this color. I don’t know enough about waterlilies, so I don’t know if they were just color variations or whether it was actually a collection of different species, but given it’s a botanical garden, the latter is likely.

More from this Botanical garden soon…

The petals on the water lilly are so symmetrical! Could serve as a compass face!

  • (Sorry for the late reaction – I’ve been away for a photoshoot and without much of an internet connection)

You’re right! it does look like a compass – what a great observation. Thanks, and thanks for stopping by and looking through my portfolio, Stav!
