Early September 2009 I spent three days in Cologne (Köln) for a little photography fun with the theme “Kölnisch Wasser” – not the fragrance kind but the real water kind!

As Vladimir Kolev told me, there’s a lot of water in the Zoo, which should not be missed by a visitor to Cologne anyway. He was right on both counts, and despite the dark and rainy weather I had several hours of fun there.
Just when I arrived, the penguins were in a feeding frenzy. If you look closely, you can see they do not really swim under water: they fly! But I did not specifically want a picture of the penguins (I got plenty), but of the water, the penguins providing merely some semi-abstract shapes. That turned out harder than I thought, with them constantly popping up again to go begging for more fish.
This is part of a pair – see “Related” below for the other part.
