Cultural surfaces are the surfaces humans construct to adapt their environment to suit themselves: fences and walls, windows and doors in walls, floors, ceilings and roofs, pavement. The culture reveals itself in many aspects: technology used, the ‘how we do things here’, how the surfaces are used or modified, etc.

All the photos on this calendar were taken on two days in June 2009 in Karakul, an extremely remote village high (3900m) on the plateau of the Pamirs in Tajikistan.

I have many more photos of Karakul (and even more of Tajikistan) – one day I hope to make a book out of them. For now, this calendar will have to do.
