I was taking photos at the Esquimalt Lagoon of swans and waterbirds when I spotted this rare little guy. I sensed by its energy that it was not a local bird so I sent a photo to the government and got this answer: “You got a wonderful photograph of a bar-headed goose. This species is from the central Asian high altitude. It migrates between India and breeding grounds in China via the Himalayas. A few years ago, many died from complications when they contacted avian influenza. I believe it is threatened or endangered. Presumably it is an escapee since its normal range is so far away.” The moral is to keep your eyes open – no one else seemed to even notice this splendid ‘rare goose’.
