Dr Jonathan Clark

Dr Jonathan Clark

Watercolour, Arches 300gsm.

Dr Clark is a head and neck surgeon who is pioneering a specific method of surgery where he takes flaps of skin from certain parts of the body and uses them to make cancer sufferers have a normal looking face again.

I worked for him a few years ago and found his calmness to be amazing and this is my tribute to him.

I painted the neck as being partially exposed because this is the area he operates on. I painted his favourite painting in the background, a Klimt design that i also love and i painted tomato plants around him as he is a keen gardener and grows all sorts of herbs and small fruiting plants including miniature tomatoes.

Truth be told, i painted this for a competition and i received notification yesterday that it was rejected. Feel so blahhh!!!! So now i have to decide was the painting crap, is watercolour too lowbrow, was the framing bad, should i quit while i can? blah!!!

Dr Jonathan Clark belongs to the following groups:

Decorative and Traditional Art and Remodernist Painters' Group - 1/CALENDAR MONTH Available for sale as

Greeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints and Mounted Prints

What an Awesome tribute Marion!! Wonderful work! I really like the exposure of the nerves and other viscera :)

It may simply be that the judges are wacko and have favorites (sort of like getting on the home pages of RB) and DO NOT get discouraged, DO NOT stop painting and creating!!! You are awesome!

Marion, when it comes to rejections there is a long queue. How ever tempting it is to chance to suit other peoples tastes you must remain true to yourself otherwise your art will mean nothing to you, the most important person.
My work has never been accepted for a competition, I think it is more about being lucky than skilled.

I saw this as I was driving.. and to tell you the truth.. it touched me deeply.. another lesson.. to look for art in the people you admire.. I have chills as I write because there is someone I admire greatly in the public life and I think I shall put it out to the Universe to create something in tribute to her work in my world..
I have never seen this from you but it is indeed brilliant. and a front page piece for sure.. Again.. thank you so much Marion.. last couple days have been blessed..xox

Hi Marion, first of all congratulations on such a wonderful painting in watercolour with so much thought and meaning in the subject matter.

What a shame it was not selected...not so much rejected… these exhibitors do have reasons unknown to its artists who contribute. Space is a major factor. I am finding that exhibitions are getting bigger and the number of entries that do not make it are on the increase so it will happen to us all due to these circumstances that artists will be very disappointed from time to time. Don’t dispair or be critical of yourself or your work. Your work is wonderful and thank you for sharing it here… take strength from the support you have from me and from others here on RB.

Hey Marion. I read all your comments AND can so relate to all of that head-talk about being an artist. I had a really successful career for years and then I wanted to FLOWER, you might say.
I responded to this piece immediately with awe! Wonderful! and the truth is it could possibly win the Archibald for it wonderful revelations and beauty! Blessings on YOU, fellow artist!!

Whoever rejected this was a dolt. Had I not read that description, I might’ve thought this had been painted in oils, not watercolor. Then again, I’ve seen more than a few oil paintings that look more like watercolors, but I digress. Great work.

I happen to think this is so different and unique they, the people who judged just couldn’t deal with it or box it anywhere. In fact, its depends on what type of comp it was. Why not do another one similiar and put it in the “She who Discovers” competition. I havn’t read any of the above but I’m sure everyone has said WOW!

  • Marion Chapman replied

You are right about what box to put it in. Recently i asked about this from a fellow artist who judges competitions and he said that it is not traditional and that would have thrown them.
What is the “She who Discovers” competition?

Not traditional? I must be so naive – I thought that was the whole point of art? To express yourself and to hell with boundaries? Well I love this piece – well done :)

I bet the doctor loved this. Knowing the story, it’s very creative Marion. It says exactly what you wanted it to. As far as rejection, don’t let it get you down. There are almost always more rejections than those that are accepted. Keep up the good work. You are a very gifted artist.

My wife told me that sometimes work is rejected because the rejector is jealous … I dunno … all I know is that I reckon this is fantastic work!

    Hi. It’s me again…I simply can’t leave just yet….though I know I’ll fall asleep sooner or later….
Now I haven’t scrolled down through all your comments yet, although my eyes did light upon ginnymac’s words of encouragement. I hope, think you have thoroughly progressed beyond the immediate post rejection blues now.

But can I add my words to others….
NEVER, EVER, EVER GIVE UP! ALWAYS BELIEVE IN OTHERS, (AS IN FRIENDS, AND ADMIRERS OF YOUR WORK), AND HOLD ONTO THEIR BELIEF IN YOU AND THEIR ESTIMATION OF YOUR TALENT AND POTENTIAL. REMEMBER, VAN GOGH, AMONG MANY MASTERS, NEVER SOLD A PAINTING IN HIS LIFETIME AND WAS SOMETHING OF AN OUTCAST.

Not that that will happen to you, but I know artists are their own harshest critics and, while I would never dare to compare myself to you nor place myself in the same category by about a million miles (they’re longer than kms), the only painting I have is one I did when I was 16. And I only have that as my mum and dad had it (stored in the garage), so it wasn’t around for me to throw out.
Oh and also, I’d sort of forgotten about it.

And now I look back and regret that. Not that I was anything particularly wonderful or exceptional. But its almost like a part of me that is lost.
Don’t let it go, keep going, painting, print making, sketching, painting….or all areas and genres….just keep creating, for it is life giving, it is your oxygen.
No matter what happens in your life, and the other things that crowd in and give you great happiness, your art and your talent will remain.

And no one but you can take that away from you!
    whatever
OK. I’ll get off my soapbox now! haha..xxxx

    : )

Wow! Jan! I am overwhelmed by your incredible level of support!!! You are right to say that artists are their own worst critics, I am often so harsh on myself and go thru so many periods of wanting to give up and wondering if i am a fraud. Having said that, yes, i have moved on since this rejection – thank goodness and i went on to enrol in a university course specialising in printmaking. Your fabulous encouragement is incredibly generous and you are making me believe you!!!
Thank you thank you! Wonderful Jan!!
