Marion, this is lovely work. Inspires me to do some etching again….mmm…perhaps I’ll have to do that later in the year. Sepia looks great. Are the very dark areas also sepia, or did you ink this up in black first, with an overlay of sepia?

  • Marion Chapman replied

Hey there Elaine – thanks for you comments. the dark areas were made dark with the click of a button called “contrast” – other than that it was all hand made. I am glad you asked this question about the black as i was wondering how to achieve this on my next round of prints – might try inking up first in black and then in sepia?

This is excellent. With not having had a college education I have never experienced etching, or even seen anyone do it. I think it’s the word “acid” that puts me off, as I am a little messy and have visions of putting holes in the furniture as I splash merrily around with a bath of acid. What type of acid is it? Is etching an expensive process or can the equipment be bought cheaply? Sorry for all the questions, but that’s how I learn things :)

Hi Dave. I take printmaking lessons at Hazelhurst Community Centre, only about 5 mins from where i live. The acid is only ever handled by the teacher – they are very particular about this and they use huge heavy rubber gloves and set the acid baths up in a special area with strong extractor fans. I have however, dripped acid on my foot but nothing happened because the acid is weakened with water 1:10 or 1:6 depending on how deep you want the acid to etch the plate.
Thanks for asking and big thanks for your comments.
