blaming--the amygdala series

blaming comes from the same survival mechanisms as physical aggression and flight. blaming, however, is a mental and emotional tactic often used aggressively in relationships to protect the threatened self. a fragile and threatened ego is a constricted one—with little flexibility and little ability to self-reflect. when threatening information comes to the person stuck in this type of survival mode, the fragile ego cannot tolerate the information and must reject it. frequently, the threatening information has to be thrown back to its source or sent out into the world at large. this is a dynamic of victimization that may have been appropriate at one stage of life in which the ‘blamer’ was actually harmed. when the brain is ‘stuck’ in a frail balance due to unresolved trauma or continuing assault through substance use, for example, blaming becomes a tool through which the fragile victimize others.
