The perfect Camouflage
Yosemite’s Black Bear
This bear was on the trail before Little Yosemite.
Fascinating Bear Facts:
Bear cubs spend a little over a year with their mother. Bear cubs that were born last year may still be with their mother now but will likely be separating and going off on their own by June. If you see a small bear without a mother, it is probably a yearling that has left its mother and is on its own.
SLOW DOWN!
Seventeen bears were hit by cars last year, along with an unknown number of deer, squirrels and other park animals. Slow down and save Yosemite’s wildlife. (all wildlife everywhere)

Fabulous how he blends in so perfectly – well spotted Mar! xxx
Mar Silva in reply to David Parkin’s comment, 2 months ago
Hi David,
See the little black patch at the bottom in between the fern?
Follow that up to the thickest trunk. Right beside the bigest trunk, in the middle to the right of the trunk, is the little Yosemite bear.

Wow, in oz we only have a plethora of deadly snakes, spiders and jellyfish etc. mostly poison based scaries which leave you alone if you leave them alone (although the number of times I’ve almost stood on snakes having a sleep in the sun in the lee of a log is not good to think about). We have no huge predators like this, all I know is what I see in movies which portray them as blood thirsty killers. What are they really like and how safe are you with these beauties around? Obviously you got pretty close to take this pic. thanks for sharing Mar.
David Parkin, 2 months ago
Ohhh yes, I see him now, it must be a great feeling seeing animals like this in the wild Maria. You go to amazing places and take exceptional photographs.
Steven Joyce, 2 months ago
Great capture Mar, when I take the family bushwalking I have to keep reminding them to be quiet, only then will they spot the animals.
Mar Silva in reply to Steven Joyce’s comment, 2 months ago
Thanks..xo…You are so right. I actually stopped to listen and look,,and that is when the discovery begins! Which is when I saw the lttle bear I named “Forest”
Cheers,

Mar Silva in reply to Travis Easton’s comment, 2 months ago
Hi Travis, I never was really on their menu: Black bears eat mainly a vegetarian diet that consists of grasses, herbs, berries and nuts. Manzanita berries & acorns are some favorites in Yosemite. Other sources of food include ants, termites, yellow jackets, bees and various insect larvae they pull out of logs or from the ground. It is less common for black bears to eat meat but when in dire need of food they will kill small deer and consume animal remains left by other predators.
Thanks for the comment!
Did you see my perfectly Camouflaged rattlesnake? :)

Last summer we met a black bear while hiking along the Bruce Trail in Ontario. It took one look at us and moved on. We took one look at it and froze, scared stiff to move. Hours later we were still still trying to figure out what we would have done if it wanted the lunches in our backpacks.
This is a great shot Mar and one I’d feel very proud to enlarge and hang. Did you?
I agree with Pinky, your commentary is very useful. Thanks for passing your knowledge and information along to us.

Hi Warren, If he wanted your lunch in the backpack it would have been time for a picinic with Yogi :) Thanks for your kind words. I only have a small picture of this. Maybe someday when I have a little bit more $$$ to play with I will. And if I win the lotto I will give you one.
Thanks againg.

Fantastic Mar. I wanted to see a bear when we visited Yosemite but never saw one, only saw a print in sandy soil when I took a short walk off the road. There was a very musky smell around, like a fox, so I reckoned Mr / Mrs Bear wasn’t far away. That was close enough!!
buddykfa, 2 months ago
This is a very well taken shot, Mar.
At first I was admiring the shot of the forest
and the effects of the light on the dead branches.
then, center frame, I spotted your little buddy again.
You certainly had a lucky day.
happy trails, Mar, ...........buddy

Mar Silva in reply to jacqi’s comment, 2 months ago
Thanks xxx
Your probally right about the musky smell! In the last 15 years I have only seen 2 beers in the valley. 1 by mirror lake and one by Curry Village. All the others I’ve seen have been in the High Country :) Guess the Rangers do a good job scarring them away :)
