Artist's Description

Mourning Cloak Butterfly
Nymphalis antiopa
 Family: Nymphalidae
August 30, 2012
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

While out strolling today, a beautiful Butterfly landed directly in front of me batting it’s wings. I had no camera so I raced back with one in tow hoping to see it again. It finally appeared in front of me on the ground and as I bent down, a cyclist whizzed by scaring it off. I saw it again twice buzzing around my head headed back, but couldn’t catch it fast enough. I sat in my garden with a nice cup of tea and saw it’s return! Grabbing my camera, I stealthily approached, it refused to open it’s wings for me. Like a tight-lipped child. It was a standoff..me and those closed wings. It finally opened and I went clicker hungry! This was one of them. I felt like I had won the Butterfly West!
