Strange Trees 4

Strange Trees 4

I’ve had a weekend of experimenting with this theme and this is my fave of the ones I did.

This is encaustic wax.

Background was done on the hotplate with a roller, then the rocks were put in with the iron while it was still on the hotplate (quite like working hot-on-hot) and the rest was done off th hotplate with the stylus and micro-tip.

Strange Trees 4 belongs to the following groups:

All Around the Styles, Artists from Essex, England, Bits and Pieces , British Painters, EncausticNow!, In Another World .., Live and Let Live, Outsiders, Safe Haven, Shameless Self-Promotion, Vibrant and Vivid Color and Who are YOU to Judge? Available for sale as

I really love this one…......this is stunning…....I love this series
How do you paint with the roller on the hot plate…......do you rub the wax over the painting surface and then use the roller?.........
    pam :)

  • Maria Louise M... replied

It’s very easy to paint with a roller on the hotplate. You set the plate to a high temperature then rub the wax block over the card. Then I turn the heat down to about 7. I use a sponge roller (start with the lightest colour on the card) and roll across the surface with a gentle pressure, moving up the page towards the darker shades to blend in the edges. Add more colour as necessary. Once the background is how I want it, I add the rest with the iron/stylus. If I want to do more detailed work, I take it all off the hotplate and let it cool, then work on the cold surface with the heat tools. Hope that helps.

This series you have created is magical and captivating Maria!!! These hold your signature dear friend!!! I love your style!!! There is a place by my home called the Bluffs. Big cliffs with trees choosing to make their homes on the cliff sides. It truly an enchanting place. Your series makes me think of this favorite place of ours….ENCHANTING!!!! Keep them coming!!!! :)) xoxoxox

Thank-you…..do dragons live at the Bluffs? Wouldn’t that be something!!!! I’m enjoying these so much that I’m sure there will be more, if not of trees, then certainly something in this style!

Love this style – I’ve never come across this technique before…

  • Maria Louise M... replied

Thanks….encaustics have been about since the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used it, but it’s only really become more widely used again in the past 20-odd years or so. I love it’s vibrancy! Have a look at Encaustics Now! on RB. There are some amazing encaustic artists on there!
