A Dolphin’s Sonar Abilities
Sonar refers to sound navigation ranging. It involves using and interpreting sounds to detect something’s location underwater and is especially handy for two reasons.Dolphins have been using this skill, known as biosonar, for millennia. So they’re pretty darn good at it. The tricks of sonar are built into their DNA, so much so that they can tell the difference between a BB gun pellet and a kernel of corn from 50 feet away [source: Gasperini]. A dolphin’s sonar process, also used by bats and some whales, is called echolocation. If you’ve ever heard a dolphin, you’ll immediately recognize its characteristic clicks and squeaks. Essentially, dolphins use these clicks as active sonar mechanisms.

Lovely, playful painting. Great use of blues Mary! Love the freedom in this piece. Fascinating and charming painting!

  • Thank you Betty. I am so happy you like it. Yeah, tell me about those blues… I don’t want to see blue for a couple of days. Also the one I am working has the sky unfinished. I might change my mind and do somthing crazy :))

Wonderful work Mary!!! I am really fond of Dolphins…..

  • Sorry Jen dear that I missed your great comment. Thank you so very much. I love them too. Back in time I watched Flipper, it was one of my favorite shows… Than the new Flipper with Paul Hogan (I believe), and the idea just hit me…. so, here it is.

Interesting… I wasn’t sure if I saw this show and looked for some pictures in Google…Found this quotation from the movie:
“She was really depressed… You have to understand dolphins and whales are not [involuntary] air breathers like we are. Every breath they take is a conscious effort. They can end their life whenever. She swam into my arms and looked me right in the eye, took a breath and didn’t take another one. I let her go and she sank straight down on her belly to the bottom of the tank.”
Thought you might like it :)

  • This is deep, but scientifically it is not correct. Dolphins are mamals, and they breath with lungs. If they don’t get air, they will drown, as I would do :)) I will check how long they can stay underwater withour breathing..
