My name is Maria ELvira.
I am from Nicaragua and I have lived here in Maryland since 1986. Before that I lived in NIcaragua with my grandmother for a few years when I was little. There is where a lot of my artistic influences began. When I was little my brother and I who are just 10 months apart, started to pay attention to the attraction we had for art inside of us. We were oh so lucky to have my uncle Marco there who had already developed the love of drawing. We would watch and watch, and our little eyes would memorize and our little brains would absorb all that we could. We also had an aunt Teresa there for a little while . She had the art in her too. She loved to draw and use lots of shading . She would take a blade and shave the lead off a pencil and then with her finger smudge to shade her drawings. My favorite was when she would take nail polish, then open up a paper clip into the shape of a triangle and paint designs on it. Then when it was dry, she would slip it on as an earing. My brother and I were just amazed about all these ways to produce art. We sucked it ALL in!!

Since we missed our parents who were in the U.S. , we held on tight to the art and it grew more and more inside of us. After my uncle and aunt left the nest, our Grandmother was our big art influence.
Mi Mama Elvira, who I’m named after…...was also an artist! She taught me to sew, to knit, to embroider, to make something out of nothing sometimes. She would make a concoction on the stove that turned in to glue for our crafts. ..................Well, these were the beginings.

When we reunited with our Mother, My brother and I could not ignore the passion of art we had inside of us. We both took up big interests and did our own thing with it. Later, I discovered that on my Mothers side there were also big artistic influences. So needless to say ….I, like my family, was born to draw, to paint, to invent, to imagine, and to make something out of nothing.

Today I am married, and a Mommy of two precious girls who are also artistic :) .....that brings a smile to my face. I am trying to get back out there to fulfill this need inside of me to create, to show my emotions through art. I need to and I’ve been pushing this to the side too long for the reg. day to day. Thank you God for the awakening you have given me lately. Hopefully I will be able to show some work here for your enjoyment and it will be my enjoyment as well.

I have had the pleasure to work with many mediums of art…..acrylics, water color, ink, pencil, photograph, fabric, metal, computer…and bits of others. Through these mediums, my art will display emotion not only in my heart, but issues from the present day problems around us. The joys of life, the blessing, the births, the deaths, .....I am driven with the love I have for my father… who has suffered much,..... my Mother who has been there for me,....... my bro’s and sis, and of course my children and husband.
......I am driven by the joy of being from a third world country like Nicaragua. I know it sounds funny hugh?...but the blessings are abundant. It has enabled me to see so much.
.....I am driven to fight for children, and children’s rights because they are so fragile.
......and, I am driven to paint, draw and create, because I love it. It is my personal therapy for sadness, and it is my celebration for the joys of life.

Thank you, Maria
