Love this close up, Margot. The colours are wonderful, and the details so crisp.

Great shot, well done

He’s a gorgeous bright bird. I wonder if he’s a cousin to the British Moorhen, they have a similar appearance. Lovely shot.

They are hard to get detail on-something about the sleek grey body color blotting out a lot of feather and even eye detail; but you did it! Amazing. I saw what must be a cousin variety with a white faceplate, so to speak. Do you know what kind that was?
Margot Kiesskalt replied
On that day, I accidentally forgot to change my white balance; I think I still had it set to tungsten lighting. I think that’s what gave me the additional detail.
The one with the white ‘faceplate’ might be a Eurasian Coot but they’re smaller than the Purple Swamphen. A bird that is similar in size and stature to the Eurasian coot is the Dusky Moorhen (which has a red ‘faceplate’). I have alot of trouble photographing moorhens because I find it difficult to get detail at a distance. I think I only have one shot in my collection and it emphasizes the reflections on the water rather than the bird!
Many thanks for your feedback.

Thanks for that jinney – I just looked up the New Zealand equivalent and it does look very similar.
Thanks for the feedback!

I was teasing!
-but it shows we are connected!
-if we have similar birdies!
Lovely capture!

Well done, Margot. These birds are quite shy and it’s hard to get a good shot, especially close up.
