Oil painting on canvas.
36 ins x40 ins.
I recently completed this commissioned portrait of Ivory, a lovely black and white heifer calf. Her sire is a purebred hereford so she has some of the rusty colour through her dark coat.
This is the largest painting I have ever done……it took every bit of strength I had to do it, but it was worth it.
I decided to use the bright sunset to add colour to what otherwise could have been a mostly monochromatic painting, I wanted to give this particular work more punch. I also used the diagonal shape of the cloudbank to compliment the diagonal shape of Ivorys’ dark coat across her body. The dark, impressionistic landscape at the bottom was included to balance the dark coat, and to keep the eye within the painting.
I have aimed for a work with a balance of dark and light tones, cool and warm colours, soft and hard edges, varying textures, interesting shapes, and the direct stare of the calf to add emotional impact and to engage the viewer.
