This house, in Sandgate, a beachside suburb of Brisbane, would originally have been only the top section of the main building. The underneath area was normally left open so any breeze would cool the rooms above. The name “Queenslander” was given to this style of house because the big verandahs and the house being constructed on stumps (wood pillars) was not common in the other states of Australia.
