Bo-Kaap - Cape Town Malay District by

Bo-Kaap, situated on Signal Hill, was established by freed slaves who had been brought from south East Asia – Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia – by the Dutch. They became known as Cape Malay. They were predominantly of the Muslim faith and the area is still 90% Muslim – a throwback to the Apartheid era. The first official mosque in South Africa, Auwal, was built here in 1797.

We spent too short a time in Cape Town. It is obviously a city of great variety. This area is memorable for its colour and general atmosphere.

Very beautiful image Margaret, wonderful colour and light.
Have you considered removing the van from the left hand side, in my opinion, it is the only thing that spoils this excellent capture. Please do not take offense to my suggestion, it is meant to be constructive.

  • Hi Wayne, Thank you for your comments and your suggestion about the van. I must admit I hadn"t really thought about it. A second opinion is always appreciated and I will certainly review the photo in the next few days to see if I can improve it. Since I have joined RB I have become more discerning about photography and hope to continue to improve further.

  • Hi Wayne, Thank you once again for your suggestion. I have now taken out the van and it does improve the shot. I didn’t do it earlier because it was in a competition and voting was underway.
    Regards, Margaret

Congratulations on your challenge win, Margaret. You now have the privilege of choosing our next challenge topic. Please look through our previous topics and try not to choose something too close to one of these.

  • Hi Adrian, I had not anticipated having to choose the next topic and I have found it “challenging” so I hope I have made a reasonable choice -“photos from the air”. If you have any reservations about my suggestion please contact me.
By the way, I was delighted to have been voted no 1 in the last challenge. Regards, Margaret

‘Photos from the aiir’. Now that’s an intreresting choice! Thank you. Do you have a photo we could use as the avatar for the challenge?

  • Hi Adrian, I suggest you use “Aerial of crater in South Africa” which is on page 20 of my photos. Hopefully others in the group will be as receptive to the topic as you have been. Regards, Margaret

Congrats on your challenge win…well deserved! I must hunt this area out when next in CT.

  • Hi IngridSonja, thank you for your comment. It is certainly an interesting area . We only had a short time there on a “city tour” so if you are able to spend an hour or more I am sure you will find lots of treasures.
