I Saw The Gulls Greet The Morning by

I drove two hours to my favorite drydock hoping the rain would hold off for a while. I found a rusted out old blue barge that someone is repairing – it looks beyond repair to me – and it had the most marvelous mess of cracked paint and rust and paint splatters all over it. Unfortunately it was in the water which luckily was very shallow. I found a flat log that I dumped in the murky water and managed to stand on to shoot, put my tripod into the water (and mud!) and attempted to take some macro shots further away from the subject than I like to be (24" instead of 4"). I managed not to fall in and got a few shots. But then came the rain, so that was the end of that adventure.

I love macro abstract work of rejected and neglected items in our society, especially rusty old dumpsters (skips) around the back of buildings, battered boats up on dry dock, rotting wood, bark of trees, and so on. Im fascinated by the color and texture that appears with a macro lens. I do almost no post-processing after taking the shot.

I keep looking at it, and it looks like a huge flock of seagulls flying over a cliff into the wild blue yonder!!

  • You’re right … there are a bunch of seagulls there. Good spotting!

My, you are a dedicated ruster! A two hour drive, especially when the weather was iffy! It’s a great shot. Almost like a huge flock of birds in a beautiful blue sky.

  • Yeah, Im a bit of a rust and dumpster fanatic I guess! I should have waited until this weekend to go as its delightfully fine and sunny!
