Best viewed LARGER. I spotted this dumpster a week ago and thought it had potential. However, it is on a main highway and I get self conscious hanging around dumpsters! So I decided 9am Saturday morning would be a good time – before people get up and off to do shopping etc, and also the sun was in the right place. So I pulled up my little sports car, hopped out, set up the tripod and got to work. I was opposite a major furniture retailer and at one stage I looked up and saw they had a very interesting old dumpster at the side and thought I might go over there maybe late Sunday when they are closed. Anyhow, back to work – head down, bum up, on my hands and knees, lens about 2 inches from the dumpster, and I hear a plaintive female voice saying “Excuse me ma’am, but what are you doing?” “Oh shit” I think, “here I go again with this corny explanation about being a well brought up woman who happens to get her kicks out of photographing dumpsters.” I start my patter, and she heaves a sigh of relief and said “Well, we’re standing over there (pointing to the dock at the side of the shop where they load the furniture into trucks) and we thought you were dumpster diving … and then I saw you with a tripod and thought maybe you found the tripod in the dumpster. And we saw your sports car and decided you werent so poor you had to get into dumpsters. So I said to the guys I was going to come and ask you why you are doing this … wow, thats really interesting that you are taking photos.” LOL in my head at this point…. well, we had a nice little chat and she invited me over to shoot the blue dumpster on the side of their loading dock. I gave her my biz card with my zenfolio.com website on it and told her to check out my dumpster photos some time.
About 15 mins later I went across the road to look at their blue grey dumpster … immediately Im surrounded by this woman and three burly guys who load the furniture. They’ve already checked out my website and are highly impressed and want me to shoot their dumpster. It was a hoot. Anyhow, I got home and one of the guys had put four comments on my website one of which was that he wants me to do some portraits and “I’ll be in touch”. So who would of thought of this as a way to drum up business!
This dumpster had some interesting features. I took this at extremely short range with Nikon D90 Nikon 60mm macro on tripod. I love the texture of this, and the rich color embedded in the metal solder.
