Japanese Memorial Portrait
Commissioned Memorial Portrait…Man dressed in Marshal arts clothing
apx. 40inch x 50inch
Archer drawing paper cold press 2ply off the roll because I needed to get the size I wanted and it didn’t have too much tooth to it. Graphite spread nicely on it especially the background that took forever building to get the contrast without a shine. Light and contrast are an important part of my work because it creates depth…It is also “Where” you put your light that creates a three dimensional effect of realism… This is one of my best works. I felt his presents when I did this piece. I had a real sense of peacefulness…It flowed very easlily…there was no stuggle.
I am a realist In my artwork.. I do a lot of portraits ..so it is important that I capture that person in different ways…Not just in visual but also expression in the subjects eyes…There must be something my viewer can identify with that will draw them in…Someone they will recognize…someone they know well.
I used graphite from 2h to 9B and charcoal for really dark areas

ANd I just had to add this – you took the time to do the WHOLE background – I am so impressed!

Paul Ramnora
As a big time martial arts fan, I always wanted to be able to draw a man in a Judo suit; I can’t believe how well you’ve drawn it; the facial character/bodily gesture/the suit/the texture/the crinkles/the seams/right down to the man’s hands/veins/and, the way light bounces off of everything…all absolutely AMAZING ;-)
Paul Ramnora
Frankly, I don’t regard your work as being called: art; at least, not in the normal sense. Instead, I honestly believe it’s GENIUS! There are artists/and, there are ‘artists’; people who seem to come for an entirely different planet; and, quite truly, you are one of those; such people are GIFTED/blessed almost beyond belief! ;-)
mimi yoon

Love the essence you’ve captured here. Your work is amazing!

The subject stands as a figure of ‘quiescence’: latent authority. Oh, by the way, that’s ‘martial arts’, and he’s wearing a suit for jiu jitsu or Judo. As an ex-karate student, I know the difference.
Stunning capture of his countenance!!
Margaret Harris replied
Thankyou Lensman 2008…I just learned something…yes he is something isn’t he…He taught “Judo” for 61years….and I swear he was there when I did this work…It came together so peacefully and quickly I could hardly believe it…and I think it is my best work!
Lensman2008
Hi Margaret,
If I did some research, I would be able to find out his name.
My karate instructor, Shiro Asano has been teaching since around 1967 and will be 70 years old in October this year. I also met, and trained under, Sensei Kanazawa who signed his name on my karate suit, which my late mother embroidered over in black and red. I still have that suit (or ‘gi’ (hard ‘g’) as it’s known in Japanese)
Lensman2008
Hi Margaret,
given that your portrait is a ‘Memorial’ portrait, I wonder whether the he could have been this man. As you will see from the link, he died 16 years ago, but the image is striking given that he would have been slightly thinner if he had been your subject, but then I don’t know when you drew the portrait. It’s only conjecture on my part.
It’s also notable that he practiced Karate under the tutelage of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern day Shotokan.
Margaret Harris replied
Hi Lensman 2008…I have the man’s name ..it is Jen Nakahara..it is pronounced Jen but you spell in Jene…I hope this helps you out because this man died about sixteen years ago. It is my best work. I know his daughter very well…she is a reallly beautiful person and the way she talks about her father…he was to…..take care…Margaret Harris

John Harding
I love the how you created the texture in the background giving it that 3D look, brilliant Margaret
Margaret Harris replied
It’s all to do with light and contrast to build depth…The paper I used has a stiple surface and it took forever to do the background because the pigment had to be even…By the looks of your work you already know all this…You have a lot of talent
John Harding
hey thanks Margaret. But you really nailed it with this piece, don’t you recon, like you must have been very satisfied with your efferts, awesome

Hello Margaret, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the narrative to go with this outstanding piece. I love that you felt the prescence of your subject. I relate to that feeling completely. That is when I know I create my own best pieces and it is a very special and unique feeling.

Even though realism is nothing I’m going for in my own little drawings it’s always great to see what amazing things others achieve in that field. I can almost see some photographers start to cry because they fear they could lose their job :D
