This is Torti, a Mountain Tortoise (or Leopard tortoise (Geochelone pardalis) rescued from the pot and certain death and spending the winter with me until I can find a safe haven for her this coming summer, probably at one of the Game Reserves situated nearby.

Here in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa, where I live on an 8,5ha smallholding, we are still blessed with many little animals passing through our properties – tortoises, hedgehogs, snakes, guinea fowl, partridges, jackal, small buck, snakes and many more. Unfortunately they are all at risk of being caught in traps by locals either looking to eat them or sell them at the road side. Another risk is the many veld fires we have during winter, which claims the lives of many of these little creatures, especially the slow-moving like tortoises.

Here Torti is enjoying a lunch of chopped celery, carrots, baby marrows, apples, a little lettuce, a bit of chicken and chopped leaves from the Echeveria, which she loves. She also favours Dandelions, which I leave to grow wild in the garden.

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

I love tortoises, I used to keep them as a child but wouldn’t now as they should be in their natural environment.

  • And I so agree with you Sue. I wish it would be something all parents whould teach their children, that wild animals are not pets.

Torti is probably thinking about now…….Move, what does she mean move, I’m doing great right where I am. LOL

  • Ha ha ha ha! So well put Jim! She has now started to recognised when it is meal times, and tapping on the bowl with a spoon brings her from wherever she’s hiding in the tall grass to come and enjoy her meal!
