W & N watercolour on Bockingford 300gsm

I used to have huge bushes of lavender in my garden (Tarlton, South Africa), my favourite being the English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia (formerly L. officinalis), as it is a strongly aromatic shrub growing to 1–2m tall, the leaves are evergreen, and the flowers are a pinkish-purple (lavender-coloured), produced on spikes 2–8 cm long at the top of slender, leafless stems 10–30 cm long, and they make wonderful little displays in narrow vases or as dried bunches. The name is misleading, as it is not native to England at all, but native to the western Mediterranean region.

Lavender, sweet lavender;
come and buy my lavender,
hide it in your trousseau, lady fair.
Let its lovely fragrance flow
Over you from head to toe,
lighting on your eyes, your cheek, your hair."

- Cumberkand Clark Flower Song Book 1929

“The lavenders (Lavandula) are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. An Old World genus, distributed from Cape Verde and Canary Islands and Madeira) across Africa, the Mediterranean, South-West Asia, Arabia, Western Iran and South-East India. It is thought the genus originated in Asia but is most diversified in its western distribution.

The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, sub shrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia and India.

Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens worldwide, they are occasionally found growing wild as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. However, since lavender cross-pollinates easily, there are countless variations within the species. The colour of the flowers of some forms has come to be called lavender."

    Have never grown any, but do so enjoy the fragrance. Fine sketch and I really enjoyed the narrative.

  • They really are lovely to have around Jim, but one problem is that they spread very fast into great, big bushes and get very ‘woody’ when they mature, so one certainly needs LOTS of space! glad you like it, thank you!
