The guinea fowl counts: one, two, three, four …
Pray what is all that counting for,
Out there among the deep dark pine trees?
The bird, driven by knowledge’s itch,
And doing so without a glitch,
Is counting what it’s worth in guineas.

Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914)

Guinea fowl are native to Africa, but the Helmeted Guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) has been domesticated and both feral and wild-type birds have been introduced elsewhere. These birds are normally monogamous, mating for life. However, occasional bigamy has been recorded for the Helmeted Guinea fowl (how dare he?!)

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

  • Baie dankie Liz, and thank you very much for the fav! When I’m feeling creative and inspiration just won’t come, the only thing I can do is turn to my favourite, sketching birds!

Great sketch ! Yeah, they are great burglar alarms, we used to have them when I was a kid. My old man always used to reckon they were saying “bugger off..bugger off” ;-)

  • In our part of the world, we think they’re saying “come here, come here!” and they can carry on for hours! Great that you like this, thank you Andrew!
