  1. Bamboo is not a weed, it’s a flowering plant. Bamboo is a magnificent plant.
    - Steve Lacy

A bit of Bamboo growing in the one corner of my pond area in my garden (Tarlton, south Africa) – I DID make a concerted effort to remove it all, after it almost cracked my pond in half, but here it is, back again after our Summer rains! When removing this, as you dig, you see runners going in all directions under-ground, and it’s not good enough to just chop them off and remove the main plant, because shortly there are sprouts everywhere! It’s as if the digging and chopping actually aggravates and activates them!

I haven’t been out sketching in the field for some time, first it was too hot (Summer), and now the past couple of weeks have been too cold! So turning to my garden for inspiration is always an option for me!

Bamboo – Watercolour, using only Payne’s Grey and a bit of Sap Green on Visual 200gsm watercolour paper with a textured back-ground from Boccacino

How do you get into my head so easily. When we first married in 1961, wallpaper with bamboo just like this on it was all the rage and we had one wall of our lounge papered with it. Young love – ahhh those were the days. Beautiful image Maree, instant fave. Alma

  • Ah, thanks for the fav Alma, much appreciated! And I remember those wallpapers, were all the rage here in the 70’s and 8’s (I thing S.A. is a bit behind fashion! Smile!)

Beautiful..we had bamboo in the Japanese style garden at the house i grew up in, in the 70’s. the bamboo grew out of control and dad was forever trying to get it out of the lawn!

  • Thanks Donna! Aaaah yes, luckily I managed to get rid of it and in future will (maybe) plant it in a pot so it’s a bit easier to control! But I do love Bamboo so, it gives a lovely lush feel to the garden….
