“Man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.”
~ Rachel Carson

Winter is looming and soon it’ll be time to be cutting our fire-breaks again. Every Winter we have this veld-fire (bush fire) phenomena, spectacular, yet devastating at the same time. Such a great loss in animal life, yet so necessary for the health of our ecology… Many of our plants will not flower until they have been ravaged by fire and many of the fires ARE naturally caused by lightning, but it is man’s carelessness that causes fires in areas that are not ready for it yet that is the most heart-breaking.

This is a depiction of the fires raging over the hills of Magaliesburg and Tarlton (Gauteng, South Africa), where I live.

About Maree Clarkson

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

This certainly is a reality, even here in Aus. A shame for the loss of animal life, I always think of the tortoises.. :-( but so necessary for new growth and the survival of certain flora, as well as contolling natural veld fires.
    Great job, Maree.
    Helette

  • I know our countries are so similar as far as these fires go Helette, and I also feel for the tortoise, the hedgehogs and all the other little animals that don’t manage to escape. Pleased you like it, thanks a lot.

Great painting. Bittersweet description. I’m saddened by the loss of any animal (especially in a fire), yet in some cases, it’s all in God’s plan.

  • I know nature takes care of itself Marsha, but like much of man’s folly (note I didn’t say WOMAN!), many unnecessary veld fires can be avoided if people would just take care. Great that you like thanks, thanks a lot.

this is wonderful – the colours are very dramatic and the glimpse of the fire approaching does bring chills…we get plenty of those here too…as well as floods, cyclones etc etc…it’s the price we both pay for living with such beauty

  • I’m really pleased you like it Julie-Ann, and thank you for the fav!
