Camera : Kodak EasyShare C195 – Pic taken in my garden in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa.

“The Smurfs are little blue people who live in magic mushrooms. Think about it.”

These two mushrooms popped through my lawn (Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa) when we were having a lot of rain roundabouts the 7th January 2011. They started off as two strange, cigar-shaped white fungi that pushed through the grass until they were about 15cm high, and the next day I encountered these two lovely little umbrellas! The tallest one is about 20cm high.

According to Carla, who hosts Fungilicious, this shroom is a “Shaggy Mane” and is edible, but once they start turning colors and ‘ink’……they’re unsafe to eat.

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

yum! While still white…these are edible…called Shaggy Mane. They’re eaten ‘with caution’ as some people are allergic or if eaten with alcohol some people (me!) have reactions. Once they start turning colors and ‘ink’……they’re unsafe to eat. This is their sporing stage…awesome yard decoration and a beautiful image!

  • Wow, interesting info Carla, and thanks for the identification! Gonna put that in my description, if you don’t mind! And I DID observe what you call “inking”, it was within a day or two, the hot sun…? Thanks for popping in and your lovely comment!
