Overhead! look overhead!
‘Mong the blossoms white and red–
Look up, look up! I flutter now
On this fresh pomegranate bough.
See me! ’tis this silvery bill
Ever cures the good man’s ill.
.
Shed no tear! oh, shed no tear!
The flower will bloom another year.
Adieu, adieu– I fly– adieu!
I vanish in the heaven’s blue,
–Adieu, adieu!

- John Keats

My resident Fiscal Shrike, surveying her domain from a Winter branch, ever-ready to pounce on some small insect she sees on my lawn. She’s become quite au fait with the one bird feeding table in my garden (Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa), where I leave tit-bits of mince and suet for her. She’s raised many pairs of twins here in the past three years and no other Fiscals are allowed in the garden, being sent on their way as soon as she’s aware of them!

About Maree Clarkson

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

“There is a fine line between dreams and reality; it’s up to you to draw it.”

  • Thank you Liz! She’s still a favourite in my garden, even though she is horrible to all the other birds!
