I am fascinated by Barbara Glatzeder’s art and her use of coffee as a background for many of her absolutely beautiful works, so I’ve taken a cue from her and painted these daisies almost totally with coffee, including the background, which I did yesterday and then let it dry. Then I did the flowers straight on the page with coffee this morning (Nescafé instant, made VERY strong!), no sketching. A bit of grey/green was used for the flower stalks.
When looking at the original, the coffee, when it dries, leaves the richest, shiniest, wet-looking patina, better than any permanent staining watercolour, absolutely great! Wish they made coffee in other colours!! And as Barbara says, the artwork smells great!
I’m disappointed in the scanning of this image, as the rich patina of the coffee doesn’t show at all.
I have used both coffee and tea in staining certain materials before, especially cotton, but never thought of using it in art. Isn’t it wonderful how inspirational the artists on RB are, lots to learn here!

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

:-))) fantastic – and yes, the scans don’t do the coffee justice … Haha I use Nescafe Gold (instant) Lovely, the combination with the watercolour. Creamy watercolour pencils work well with it too, they also have that shine :-))
Thank you Barbara, and also thanks for the tips! I’ve got plenty to occupy my mind now! I’m not one for using a lot of painting ’techniques, like using salt, or bubble wrap, plastic, etc, but anything water soluble is just up my alley! Once again, thanks for the inspiration! RB rocks! Whoot whoot!

Very cool, haven’t tried this before, let me get the coffee out.
Oh yeah! go for it Jim! We can start a ‘coffee club’!

What can I say? You beat me to it! I too have been considering Barbara’s coffee backgrounds over and over again. It’s a combination of two things I already tried (coffee in my photography, salt in my watercolors). Her work is indeed a big inspiration.
But I’m babbling here! What I really wanted to say was: love this! A fabulous watercolor in the true meaning of the medium.
Those who snooze, lose, Peter! It’s absolutely thrilling to work with (have never liked the salt!) and the originals are really beautiful! Thank you for your lovely compliment!

I’m not snoozing! just to busy with my photography at the moment, not to mention planning another trip to a place far, far away. ;^)
You just keep on experiment for me then, will you?
Right, and between Barbara and I you can pick up all the tips! lol Enjoy your trip – the North Pole?

the best i can do with coffee is to make rings on the table or on a piece of paper that wasn’t meant to be stained with coffee… this is GORGEOUS!! i think you have found something here!!! maybe try a little deluted mustard, i know it stains!!! and tea… and blueberries!! i’m sure the list could go on and on…. this painting is spectacular… i’m in awe of your talent!!!
Aaaaw, thank you for a lovely comment Barb! And I do also think the list is endless! How about some Mulberries and Pomegranates? lol

Great result, wonder if it works with wine!
