From the bottom of the garden... by

Watercolour and ink sketch in Moleskine Large Notebook

“From the bottom of the garden,
enthroned in his earthenware pot,
the hydrangea god surveys his minions—”

Due to the acidity of our soil here in Tarlton (South Africa), which is caused by the many Blue Gum trees planted in the area, our Hydrangeas are mostly mauve, blue or pink, and if we want a white variety, we have to add a lot of alkalinity to the soil.

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

All mine are either blue or pink as well Maree. Nice sketch.

  • Thanks Jim. I think acid soils are far more prevalent, especially if one has lots of trees on one’s property.

Nicely done Maree, my grandmother grew those in a nice neat row in front of her house. She was always so proud of, “My Hydrangeas.” Hers were always that very same mauve color.

  • We all seem to have wonderful memories about Hydrangeas Jerry, thank you for your lovely comment!
