Watercolour in Moleskine 200gsm watercolour sketch book – 8″ × 5.5″

  1. “The same rule holds for us now, of course: we choose our next world through what we learn in this one. Learn nothing, and the next is the same as this one, all the same limitations and lead weights to overcome.”
    - From Jonathan Livingstone Seagull

On one of my last visits to Durban (on the South Coast of South Africa), a seagull landed not far from me, obviously hoping for a snack, but alas! I was empty-handed. I pulled out my sketch-book from my beach bag, but couldn’t get in a sketch edge-ways if I tried! Obviously determined to get that snack, he was pulling at my towel and my beach bag, trying to pry it open to see what was inside. Eventually, giving up, he ambled off to the side, standing at ease on one leg, at last allowing me to get in a quick sketch. I added some preliminary colour with my watercolour pencils, finishing it off once I got home.

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

He’s loverly. I have seen a few of these blokes hoping around on one leg…:))

  • Thank you Diana-Lee! It’s always sad to see a bird with a disability, but luckily this guy had both his legs, just decided to relax on one!

Maree, I really admire your paintings, again a picture that makes me smile
His expression says…..ok, so you got nothing…..I can wait!

  • And it DID seem that he was doing exactly that Heidi! When the grand-children got back from swimming, he was lucky enough to get a piece of hamburger, so his waiting paid off. Maybe he knew the kids were actually the ones with the food…? Their intelligence certainly seems to suggest so… Thank you for your lovely comment!
