Taken in my kitchen (Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa)

My Cape Robin (Cossypha caffra) is still a regular visitor to my kitchen (you can read his full story here) and this morning I managed to get a couple of pics of him in the kitchen. I usually put out some minced meat for him on the kitchen table at about 4.15am, because that’s when he usually comes in, sitting in the kitchen and singing at full throttle. His wife joined him this morning, but hastily took flight when I appeared with the camera. This Victorian Balloon-back chair seems to be his favourite perch.

The Cape Robin is resident breeder in southern and eastern Africa from Kenya south to Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. It is a common species at forest edges and in scrub, fynbos, karoo, plantations, gardens and parks.

I am a watercolorist living on my little piece of African soil in Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa. The inspiration for my art is the wonderfully rich variety of Fauna and Flora to be found throughout this beautiful country.

What a dear wee bird Maree – I’m pleased your birds are house trained !! I’d hate to think what ours would be like if I left the ranch sliders open – ours are a messy bunch ! Lovely capture and story.

  • Thank you Roy! Ha ha! Not fully house-trained, I have to clean up the odd little white blobs every now and then. I have even found them in my walk-in closet, what on earth he would want in there is beyond me! Unless he is looking for a handbag or a nice pair of shoes to nest in!
