The Horses
Whilst visiting Melbourne, where I grew up, I visited the place where my horse, Trinity, died. He was my horse from when I was just an 11year old kid until I was a 23 year old uni student.
Trin got colic, and, after trying everything possible, the vet had to put him down. It was very hard. Afterwards, and just on dusk, all the other horses in the paddock (his friends) gathered around him in a circle to pay their respects. My mum and I went and stood with them in this silent ceremony. At the end, the horses suddenly took off, bolting up the hill.
I returned to the paddocks, all these years later, and took this photo of the horses that are there now. To get the photo to reflect how I feel, I played around with it in Photoshop, and added layers of one of my paintings, Darkened Inferno
For a short poem that I wrote after Trin’s passing, click here

The fact they die is almost a reason not to have animals anymore. But , well, can’t live without them. A very emotional image. I love the clever layering and the beautiful textures. The deep red and black and the dark atmosphere give me a feeling as if this comes straight from sub-concious levels of your mind.

It was a privelege to see you create this lovely image of the ephemeral, Mare, so evocative…

I’m really moved by the story you’ve told about this image too. I like how you’ve moved away from typical equine representations and done something darker.

Wonderful treatment mare!

a really beautiful image and a very moving story – i know how close we get to our animals – horses are very sensitve creatures too – I had a horse that died because she broke her pedal bone – broke my heart – i was 15, so quite a long time ago now, but still think of her.

a haunting image and words (I got tears reading it as I know only too well the hole these fourlegged people leave in our lives when they pass)..... your image is like an epitaph, an honoring of the love you felt for your equine friend…...and how it still lives on in your heart.
I love the treatment…. and effects….. all very beautiful…..

Thank you all so much. All of the energy and interest generated, I send back to my equine friend, and I also want to honour everyone else who has had the experience of loosing someone close to them (no matter how many legs!)
