Artist's Description

I risked being arrested as a spy taking this photograph in 1963.
You were forbidden to take photographs of trains and railways stations in communist Czechoslovakia.
I was a teenager at the time, in the first party of school children ever to go behind the Iron Curtain.
My uncle Cyril, a war artist, had lent me a very excellent, extremely rare Dejur interchangable lens 35mm camera with a standard 50mm which I duely loaded with colour film by Agfa.
So despite all the soldiers with rifles who were patrolling the corridor of our train … I just manged to find enough of a window of opportunity to snap this shot of a huge steam train opposite us with the Red Star on its front.
This photo is on a transparency (fast fading) … and because of its nature … must be very rare indeed.
