African Puff Adder (Bitis arietans arietans)
Quite a bad-tempered snake, responsible for more fatalities than any other African snake due to its wide distribution, large size, large amounts of potent venom (cytotoxic) and long fangs that inject it deeply. They are reluctant to flee and willing to bite, always hissing and puffing when approached, hence the common name.

Uou sure make them look sweet and innocent!

    Awesome image!

  • Thanks swaby. I don’t think this is one for you, he belongs to the snakes with the longest fangs.

Having kept snakes in SA and having had a juvenile Puff Adder I can vouch that they are bad tempered snakes. Cracking image, showing a stunning colour varient as not all Puffy’s are this beautiful colour.

  • Thanks devilineden. The ones from the western drier regions of SA tend to be paler than those from the wetter east and like most snakes, the colours are more vivid after shedding (sloughing) their skin.

Awesome close up of this snake. Brilliant.

  • Thanks wayne51. It was an easy shot, he stayed in the same position for hours.

What lense did you use. How long would this snake have been? Wayne

  • For this shot, I used a Nikon P90, not an SLR. The average length is about 100cm. but they can grow to 190cm. This one was just over the average. They are also quite fat snakes.
