Yes, take back the curtain, what we all try and do. You’ve captured this wonderfully. You take remarkable photographs, at once both eerie and engaging. Breathless glimpses.
This is so wonderful, Malen. I favorited it a few days ago, but wanted to come back and really take another look. You’ve captured the child’s inquisitiveness so perfectly and the muted colors inside juxtaposed with the bright, colorful, inviting light outside adds to the story. Really great – I wish I’d made this piece of art!
The subject matter is very interesting, conjuring many guesses as to just what the child is thinking and what is beyond the window in the garden and you have made a great photograph of that.
HOWEVER!
I feel that as it is now there is just too much wasted space in the frame. You have to ask yourself just what is the subject here and just how well do you want to present it. To my mind and eye this fine photograph needs a drastic and dramatic crop that will give much more impact to the child and curtain and justify why the child’s legs have been cut out of the image by your framing in camera. I strongly suggest cropping to bring the top edge of frame down to just above the clouds and our right edge of frame in far enough to leave a little space beside the first discernible flower behind the curtain. I also strongly suggest cropping to bring the bottom edge of frame up to eliminate the skirtingboard as this will further contain the very best of this scene. All this could probably be well contained as an 8×10 standard size.
Your exposure under the great lighting is very well done and your focus has rendered a nice crisp, clear image of the child and curtain showing lovely detail. The colours are refreshingly natural and the contrasts most pleasing. Lovely work!
Definitely not your-every-day child portraiture. I love your work, had a look through it all. I read the comments including Dennis Gray’s suggestion about this one and it’s so good of him to write a full feedback like that. I want to say that for me, cropping in further in the way Dennis suggests would take away from the whole mood, to my reading. The crumpled curtain at the bottom RHS and the skirting board is perfect and beautifully lit in terms of the rest of the image. I think you need the height in the sky to convey the depth and expanse of the child’s’ view’. I even like the fact that the legs are chopped off. To have the child framed in the middle would destroy the feeling of a ‘spontaneous’ shot of child unaware. Beautifully rendered image.
very imaginative. I think Dennis has some excellent suggestions. Would like to keep some of the bottom of the curtain though. Adds character. Great work
