Artist's Description

A little series of sights captured in the Ravennaschlucht (a side gorge of the Höllental (Black Forest, Germany), about 27 km east of Freiburg.

Both the name of the Ravennaschlucht and of the Höllental are based on French names – the former is supposedly based on “Ravin” (the French word for gorge), the latter was called “Val d’enfer” (valley of hell) by French troops in the 18th century after retreating through the valley/gorge, that in parts was very dangerous, if not deadly, to traverse – that name has remained.

The upper end of the Ravennaschlucht is near Breitnau and not too far from Hinterzarten (train station). The lower end of the gorge is inside the Höllental, next to the Hotel “Hofgut Sternen” (also with a parking lot for hikers and a bus stop).

The Ravennaschlucht has several waterfalls, the two largest measure 16 m and 4 m.
