A view through the gates of the upper castle of “Burg Rötteln” above the city of Lörrach (south Germany)

The castle was probably started in the early 11th century, but first written documents about the castle are from around the 1250s, it was in continuous use (even when suffering much damage from the Basel earthquake in 1356 and changing hands several times in the 30-year-war) till 1678 when large parts of it were destroyed by the army of the French Marschall Crecque.

Hidden in the glare of the sun is the drawing bridge that separates the lower and upper castle.
