Sing the Sorrow

Sing the Sorrow by MaKayla Songer

Sing the Sorrow

This was one of the first pencil drawings I’ve done that wasn’t shaded with a blending stick. (I did this one before ‘Majesty.’) I’m really fond of it, even though it is rather simple. It had been a long time since I’d done a picture of a howling wolf, and if you were to go through my old sketchbooks and notebooks you would inevitably find dozens of them, but they are all very old and – honestly – not very good. I was happy to have actually done one worth showing.

Pencil on 8.5×11 sketchbook paper. Original Available.

This is very lovely. It’s probably better that you didn’t use a blending stick to show the detailed texture of the fur; especially to portray the difference between the long strands on the body and the short ones on the snout. Also love the fine strokes you did around the closed eye.

Thank you very much! :D Yes, I had just started experimenting with rendering long fur in pencil when I did this. I actually did one other wolf drawing in this style before this one. (It was the upper body of a leaping wolf. It was one of the ONLY drawings I’ve ever sold without scanning it first. :( ) But before that, I’d practically ALWAYS used a blending stick. (Granted most of those were horses, all of which had very short fur.)
